I, for one, cannot hear the difference.
But then my hearing cut off is around 16kHz (scary - it was 17kHz last time I measured!). I used to find that a 15kHz low pass filter had a subtle, but audible effect. Today, I couldn't detect a difference, though obviously it depends what you low pass filter - it's easier to detect it on white noise than on acoustic music.
My 63 year old friend can't detect a low pass filter at 5kHz. As he pointed out, transparent audio quality for him takes a lot less bits!

I have not done a proper audio test lately, but I feel my high
end is between 14k and 16k.. On my first listen, I thought '99'
'sounded' better.. I listened many times more and decided that
the 'Vibes' in '86' have a distorted sound..
I am confident that the frequency response of MP3's at 128kbs and above create no problems for me, but it seems I invariably sense an over-all lack of depth and clarity in the best of MP3's...
